Farrer Primary School

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is the school uniform?

A:  Our school colours are green and white.  You can view the school uniform on our website.  A list of uniform items is also included in the New Student Information Pack and available at the Front Office.

Q:  Do you sell uniforms at school?

A:  Yes. Our FSCA sells new and second-hand uniforms on Tuesdays between 2:45pm–3:30pm in the School Canteen.

Q:  Is there Before and After School Care?

A:  Yes.  Please click here for more information.

Q:  We’ve come from interstate and we’re not sure what class our child should be in.

A:  It is always best to discuss this with the Principal when enrolling the child.  In the ACT, children start school in Kindergarten (usually after a year of pre-school) when they will turn five before 1 May of that year.  Year 1 is then the second year of school.  In practice, the most appropriate class placement for each student will be where he/she will experience the greatest learning and social success.

Q:  Is there a school canteen?

A:  Yes.  It operates with a paid canteen manager but is always in need of parent helpers.  The canteen is open on Wednesday and Fridays.  Click here for more information.

Q:  What about “school fees”?

A: The ACT Government centrally funds Government schools in Canberra.  The school also relies on the generosity of parents making voluntary contributions to the school each year.  The voluntary parent contribution is set by the School Board and is reviewed annually.  In 2007 the voluntary contributions is at $100 for the first child, $80 for second and subsequent children, with a family maximum of $260 per year.  For some activities and excursions a fee is requested from parents to cover the actual costs associated with such events.

Q:  Do you have special programs for children who need extra assistance?

A:  Yes, we have a Special Needs committee, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Learning Assistance programs.  If you feel your child is having difficulty in any area of his/her learning, or socially, please discuss your perceptions of your child’s needs with the class teacher so that further evaluations can be undertaken.

Q:  Are parents involved in helping at the school?

A:  There are many ways parents are welcomed as helpers at school.  You may wish to volunteer as a reading tutor, IT support person, reader organiser, coach of sports team or to help in the library.  In addition, parents are always needed for canteen, banking, sports carnivals etc.  Please feel free to attend and participate in our FSCA meetings or activities.

Q:  What is the Successful Participation (Learning Management) policy of the school?

A:  Our student management practices, guide our students to make positive decisions in learning and social situations.  We aim to make all situations at school into learning opportunities and undertake a broad range of strategies to ensure student engagement in learning and social situations. Click here to view a copy of our Successful Participation Policy.

Q:  How do teachers report to parents?

A:  Formal communication with parents occurs frequently throughout the year including written reports in Term 2 and Term 4; meet the teacher in Term 1; student led Learning Journeys in Term 3; and Parent-Teacher interviews in Term 2 and Term 4.

Q:  What should I do if my child is sick or has to be absent from school?

A:  Parents are requested to telephone the school in the morning of the day a child is unable to attend school.  The school has a practice of phoning parents of students who have an unnotified absence.  Please send a note to the class teacher with your child, when he or she returns to school, as the school is legally required to account for attendances and absences.
