The school and suburb are named after William Farrer (1845 - 1906). Farrer is mostly famous for his early wheat experiments at the nearby rural property, Lambrigg. William Farrer was involved in developing wheat to withstand disease (especially rust) and the harsh Australian conditions. His most famous achievement was the breeding and establishment of Federation Wheat. His work and successes have helped Australia in becoming a leader in wheat export throughout the world.
