Farrer Primary has an establish Environment Centre which plays a key role in our curriculum.  Farrer Primary was the first school in the ACT to become a Waste Wise school and due to this many teachers from other schools come to our Environment Centre to learn about what we do.  Our students have worked with teachers and students from Preschools, Primary Schools and High Schools to show them how they can create a waste wise school.

During Environment Science lessons students work on Waste Wise practices to ensure that they have the skills to help save our environment.  All classes, and the staffroom, have compost bins which are used to feed our chickens and worms.  All classes, school corridors and staffrooms, have recycling bins for paper products, hard plastics and general litter and our students use the correct bins to ensure that our school is a role model for other schools.

Students are also responsible for everthing that happens in the Environment Centre including:

  • emptying compost bins and composting appropriately
  • feeding the chickens and worms
  • collecting chicken eggs
  • keeping the chicken run clean
  • planting vegetables
  • weeding
  • harvesting vegetables
  • feeding the turtles

A key aspect of our Environment Science lessons is working with classroom teachers to support the Integrated Inquiry unit.
