All students at Farrer Primary School learn Japanese. Pre-school to Year 2 classes receive a 45 minute lesson each week while Year 3 to Year 6 classes have a 1 hour lesson each week. Our goal is to give children an enjoyable experience of learning another language while helping them develop intercultural understanding to become positive contributors to our global society.
We use artefacts, stories, games, songs, videos and much more to give students a rich learning experience. Students develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing Japanese. We see language and culture as intertwined so our language experiences often give insight into Japanese culture, from everyday life to annual festivities in the Japanese calendar. Farrer has many opportunities to connect with Japan in meaningful ways through our Japanese Assistants and our cultural exchange with Meg's English Class in Kyoto, Japan.
There are various extra events that students at Farrer are invited to participate in. These include:
- Farrer Japanese Fun Day (whole school participation)
- ACT Japanese Fun Day
- ACT Japanese Speech Contest
- Performance Group at Canberra Japan Club's Autumn Festival
- Tanken Centre excursion for Year 6 students (in Sydney)
- Restaurant visits for Year 5 students
These events give students an opportunity to extend their knowledge and apply their skills beyond the classroom.
